Facebook Story (and WARNING)
On 8/4/2021 I received an alert by email from Facebook of some unusual activity on my account. A review of the activity showed a single log-in from Hanoi Vietnam so I immediately changed my password.
All seemed well until I tried to log in again was asked for a 6 digit verification code. Major problem was that I did not receive one and repeated attempts to have one sent to me did not work. In reviewing the Facebook “help” pages the only way I would be able to recover my account was to send Facebook a copy of my official government ID (i.e. a drivers license or passport). Note: for a number of reasons there is no way I would send that information to Facebook.
I did some research and found out I’m not alone in having this happen. People that did send in their ID to Facebook still could not recover their account and there is no way to call/contact a real person at Facebook to resolve the issue. If they relied on Facebook as the primary online place for their business, they were really screwed. (see https://abc7ny.com/facebook-hack-account-hackers/10930364/)
For those that are really dependent on Facebook, you may want to take steps to make it less so. Should you get locked out like I did, you will have to deal with the following:
- Friend lists/contacts may be lost
- Uploaded docs/photos may be no longer accessible
- Control of pages you own/manage is lost
- No access to Facebook messenger
- No access to all the 3rd party sites you decided to use the “Log In with your Facebook Account”
This is just a partial list and could be quite long if you have allowed Facebook to be a major part of your life.
For me, Facebook is not something I heavily rely on. My account was mainly for helping manage a couple non-profit pages like BCSO/SAR and keep up with a few friends from high school. Being locked out is just an inconvenience and I just made another Facebook account:
